Wellington Trip

A few weeks ago us year 7’s and 8’s went to Wellington to have a fun time together. This was my 3rd time going on a plane. it was scary taking off but then I got used to it after awhile. My ears were always popping every minute due to how high we were. My favourite places in Wellington was Te Papa, The Zoo and Weta workshop. Te papa was very interesting because I learnt about all the activities going around the world, the Zoo was fun because I got to see all the cool animals, that I have never seen before. The Weta Workshop was also awesome because we go to see all of the funky equipment and characters from different movies. Here are some photos from our trip.

T-Shirts Bags

Yesterday we got an awesome opportunity to reuse old tee shirts and
make them into bags. The lady who came in yesterday that showed
us how to make the reusable bags. Her name is Anouk and she was
the one who talked to us about reusing old tee shirts and making
them into bag. She was talking about how we can make the planet a
better place. Did you know, that to make a tee shirts use 2750 litres
of water? So instead of putting your old tee shirts in the bin you can
make a reusable tee shirt bag for toys, groceries, Christmas gift and
etc. Making the bags were very simple all you had to do was cut the
shoulder part off and the neck then draw a line on the bottom of the
t-shirt after that you make little strips then tie the strips and make a
knot and just continue with tying knots. Make sure there are no big
hole then after you have checked that your t-shirt bag is done.
Would you like to make a reusable t-shirt bag?
Here are some photos.

Colourful Chuck Close Artwork

Last week we did some art inspired by Chuck Close.
We did three pieces of art. We did Harry Potter, Bat Man and Frankenstein. I chose Batman.  We got given a square piece of paper to colour in and draw patterns. We had to do light and dark colours. On the white piece of paper we did light colours and on the Gray pieces we did dark colours. It was sort of difficult to find what colours to use.  It’s fun doing Chuck Close artwork because you can use all sorts of colours and patterns. Here is a photo of some Chuck Close artwork we have done. What are some of your favourite Chuck Close artworks?

Yesterday the year 5, 6, 7 and 8 went to a Ki o rahi tournament. This years Ki O Rahi tournament was held in Moerewa at Simpson park. There were 16 teams playing who have come from all over Northland. We won two games and lost two. But one of the cool things was that we made it to the semi finals. What we did well was working as team and sharing the ball most of the time. Unfortunately we lost the semi finals to Taumarere. The teams we played against were very good and it was hard but we tried our best. Here are some photos of us playing on the day.

Facts about Ara Ngapuhi Haka!!!

Last week the Kapa haka roopu of Paihia School learnt the proper pronunciation of Aha Ngapuhi E. A few weeks back our kapa haka tutors went to a wananga for Ngapuhi to learn the proper Ngapuhi haka. I learnt that saying the right kupu makes the haka sound better. All along our school has been saying the wrong kupu to this haka. It was hard for me to pronounce some of the kupu but I practised and practised. After the kapa haka roopu learnt the haka we had to teach the other seniors the haka. Next time I think that I should have taught it to them slower so the other kids could speak the kupu correctly. Does your school do this Haka?
Sorry there is no photo!

Interesting facts about swim safe !!!

Last week on Thursday Whaea Tracey talked to us about how to stay safe on a boat. Some of the things that she talked about I already knew but I also needed a reminder. I also learnt that if you don’t feel safe at the beach then don’t swim. Always have an adult with you and before you swim, check the current before you enter the water. I learnt some new things and one of them were flares. Here are the three types of flares, the parachute flare, Orange cloudflare and firework flare. One of the best flares is the parachute flare because stays up in the sky for longer than the other flares. Here is a DLO that I created about five ways to stay safe on a boat. Now with my new learning I’m going to teach others how to stay safe on a boat and stay safe at the beach. I will use this new information when I go fishing and next time I go swimming. Could you please give me some feedback on my DLO?

The Funky Newspaper Tower

.In Te Ngahere this week we were learning to build a freestanding tower using limited materials. We were given two sheets of newspaper and 30cm of sellotape with the time limit of 20 minutes. Our group worked together as a team and came up with an idea and started building. We learnt that we should have made the base wider than the top, and the top narrower. If we were allowed to create another tower we would use the newspaper wisely. What I enjoyed was working as a team to create our tower.
